“Each of us must confront our own fears, must come face to face with them. How we handle our fears will determine where we go with the rest of our lives. To experience adventure or to be limited by the fear of it.”
Have you ever genuinely asked yourself the question: “What would you do if you weren’t afraid?” If you weren’t afraid of
… disappointing someone
… disappointing your own expectations
… looking like a fool
… not fitting into your own story
… not making money
… having to give up and try again?
If I was not afraid I would continue to give of self and love unreservingly, whether or not my love is acknowledged and returned
If I was not afraid I would take my pieces of poetry out into the world
I was not afraid I would register for Comrades marathon
If I was not afraid I would dance anywhere and everywhere
I would buy a one way ticket to New York or London and figure out the rest when I get there
I would probably take a jab at robbing a bank
I would be more intentional about making new friendships
I would spend an entire night out in the ocean
I would get a tattoo and be that girl with three piercings on one ear
I would rock up at my friends’ homes unannounced for breakfast or lunch dates
The truth is, if I wasn’t afraid, I probably would have gone on a date with a cute boy by now
Flip. I would shine and not feel as though I need to shrink to make others feel good about themselves
I wouldn’t think twice about cutting certain people out of my life. Actually, I would just like to tell them to Fuck off!!!
I would fail over and over again and not be afraid to begin again
I would mentor young girls
I would apply to do my MBA and quit being afraid of not getting funding or making it into business school
I would go for piano lessons
I would cry more
I would ask for help and share sacred parts of self, more often than I do
The point of all of this is to find out what you truly want to do with your life. To take a hard look at what you would be doing if your fears didn’t take over your life. To think about what makes you feel alive then take a step in that direction. Keep going even if you are afraid.
Come on, let’s do it! Let us reach way back inside and drag our dreams out and LIVE them!
